What you should know about your pet's medicines

By Cheryl L. True

Pet medications are available either by prescription or over-the-counter. The latter means that anyone may purchase the medicine without the consent or advice of veterinary doctor. In short, no prescription is needed.

A prescription medication is one that Food and Drug Administration regulations allow to be obtained only by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Commonly, pet owners will ask a veterinarian for a written prescription for medications in order to procure those medicines from a source other than the examining veterinarian. Veterinarians are ethically bound to provide a written prescription upon the patient's request and to document the data in the pet's medical record.

The veterinarian may ethically charge a fee for writing the prescription and that prescription writing fee can be whatever the veterinarian chooses. The bottom line is that the client does not have to obtain or purchase the pet medication from the examining veterinarian.

Keep in mind that the veterinarian is not required to call, fax or correspond with the pet owner's supplier; but that person is ethically obligated to provide a written prescription so that the patient can obtain the medication at a supplier of his or her own choosing.

Some non-prescription medications are "sold only to licensed veterinarians". This is a company policy and not mandated by law. It is not illegal for a veterinarian to re-sell non-prescription medications to other pharmacies or outlets; nor is it illegal for another business to sell these non-prescription products.

All pet medications should be treated with respect. Keep in mind that individual animals may have an adverse reaction to just about any medication.

Your veterinarian should always be your first source of information about pet health care. Years of special training and a commitment to keeping your pet healthy will work to your advantage whenever your pet needs care or medications.

Handling your business can be hard work and it takes time. The good thing about it though is the fact you can start very small and grow at your own pace. You don't have to look rich, you don't have to spend a lot of money, and you can do great with a very small expense and a lot of work.

To sum it all up is that a business doesn't need all the expenses of a normal business. You don't need a huge office. You can work from any place, as long as you have a good computer, an internet connection and motivation to take immediate action.

Signs that your dog may have arthritis are favoring a limb when moving, difficulty sitting or standing, sleeping more, stiff or sore joints, hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs, weight gain, decreased activity or less interest in play, attitude or behavior changes and being less alert.

If your dog has any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, see a veterinarian for arthritis evaluation which will involve a physical exam and possibly X-rays. Get a diagnosis and start a treatment plan as soon as possible. Treating canine arthritis is similar to that of human arthritis.

Depending on your dog's condition, therapies may include the following:

A healthy diet and exercise to help maintain proper weight.

Drug treatment to relieve pain usually in the form of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Over-the-counter pet treatments such as pills or food containing either glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate or omega fatty acids. These may help relieve the symptoms of arthritis.

Never give your dog human medication without checking with your veterinarian first. Certain medications that are safe to us can be toxic to dogs - particularly acetaminophen and ibuprofen. A safe dose will differ between a greyhound and a dachshund.

No matter how you treat your dog's arthritis, work closely with a reliable veterinarian to ensure that your pet recovers quickly.

Giving global attention to your high school baseball prospects and standings

By Steven Summers

You may be thinking about college and want to play ball to cut tuition expenses or even get your education for free. You'll need more than luck because everybody wants a scholarship. If you are going to attract the attention of college recruiters, you'll have to compete as hard as any game.

The Internet offers one of the best ways to connect to college recruiters. Online, you can share your high school baseball prospects and high school baseball standings with the entire world. Often, that's where many of the very recruiters you're hoping to attract will look. You had better impress them.

Let's be realistic. There are lots of players in the running for scholarships. You need to look your best. You need a professional video made of your greatest sporting achievements, the kind you can show to any recruiter to open the door. Many high school athletes choose to hire a professional team to showcase their talent with the same video technology as the pros.

Even the very best high school baseball prospects and high school baseball standings don't compare to when they've seen you in action. Standings may tell the type of athlete you are, but they don' t show your spirit, the very thing recruiters are looking for. Your performance at the bat or on the pitcher's mound is where the real game is. No statistic is complete without a sports video that shows the spirit of the athlete.

Plus, if you upload your sports video to an online site, you'll be able to share your greatest moments with family and friends, anywhere in the world. You can let them appreciate your moment of glory as if they were right on the sidelines.

With a professionally made sports video, your game will look clean and slick with the greatest video production technologies possible. It's great for recruiters and shows off your best to friends and family.

The Internet is also a great place to network, which is very important to landing sports scholarships. Nobody will know how good you are until you get your game out to the world and those colleges can see you in action.

With your game on the Internet, you'll get recognition for your athletics, not only from family and friends, but the people who sign the scholarships. You can network with other players and get in touch with college recruiters. Thanks to the Internet, your game can be nationally recognized, opening the door for colleges, scholarships, and even the major leagues.
