Smell of flowers common in brain injury

By Tracy Anderson

Do you always smell flowers even when they're not around? Does this scent linger in your nose regardless of where you are?

If you answered "yes" to both questions, you probably have phantosmia, an olfactory hallucination that causes people to smell something that isn't there.

Phantosmia occurs when the nerves of the olfactory system are damaged. This may happen following a viral infection, brain tumor, surgery or exposure to toxins or drugs. The problem can also be triggered by epilepsy or it may be psychological in origin.

"Most often phantosmia is due to temporal lobe seizures, but it could also be caused by a brain injury. If you have a temporal lobe seizure, your phantosmia may be brief and you may lose consciousness or have other symptoms of epilepsy," according to Dr. Jerry Swanson, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic.

"The combination of phantosmia and olfactory delusions is often due to a psychiatric illness, such as depression or schizophrenia. Phantosmia and olfactory delusions may also occur in people with Alzheimer's disease. Although rare, phantosmia can occur as a symptom prior to a migraine. There is also some evidence to suggest that phantosmia can arise due to a disorder of the smell receptor system rather than the central nervous system," he added.

People with phantosmia may detect a variety of odors. The "lucky" ones smell fresh flowers. The most common odors, however, are rotting flesh, vomit, urine, feces and smoke.

Imagine the pain and misery these people go through with these unpleasant smells! How on earth can you enjoy dinner if these bad odors haunt you?

The bad news is very little is known about phantosmia and treatment may be difficult depending on the underlying problem.

If you smell strange odors from things that aren't there, consult a doctor to rule out the possibility of a serious disorder. The sooner treatment is begun, the better.

Is There An Easy Way to Learn Piano?

By L. M. Ray

The most popular and useful instrument in the world is the piano. The appeal of the piano is worldwide as it attracts many people because of its adaptability to different forms of musical styles. People love to learn piano, but sometimes they are disappointed because it has so many confusing methods and styles of learning.

Take your learning seriously, because if you don't do it you will find that you will not be successful. Many new students think that they should be playing Beethoven Sonatas after about several months of lessons, which is not going to happen right away. If a student has unrealistic expectations they will find that they will want to quit as they don't realize that to learn some of the basic skills of a musical instrument takes more than a few months.

A beginning piano student needs to prioritize by learning how to recognize notes and hand position. When you try to learn a new piece, start with a simple one to gain confidence. Later, after you learn how to read notes you can concentrate on fine tuning rhythm, technique, and musicality in your playing.

Beginning piano students should learn how to write some goals. Most students who begin need to set some realistic and achievable goals for themselves. If a person begins to do some organized goal setting, they will be able to become a good pianist.

If you don't have a clearly marked goal, then why are you playing? Do you want to be able to play a certain song by a certain date or do you want to know all of the notes on the scale? Decide what it is that you want to accomplish first, then do it.

Make sure you set aside a convenient time to practice your assignment or tutorials. Many students want to avoid any plan to get to their goal of being a good pianist who can master the basics. If want to be a competent pianist, practice does work and there is no easy way around it.

Don't practice too many hours every day, as you don't want to overdo it. Yet you should give yourself time to reach your small goals by practicing your assignments with care and detail by utilizing your practice time carefully. Be sure to ask your teacher if you have any concerns or questions regarding an assignment.

You do not want to become your worst enemy by being overly critical with yourself. Many beginning students have given up too early as they expected immediate results to sound like an expert pianist within a months' time. Give up the unrealistic attitude, sit down and do some serious practicing, and keep the positive attitude while asking for your piano friends for advice and help if you need it.

Three Ways You Can Pay For College

By Steve Sheehan

So, you're getting ready to go to college. Great choice, but have you checked out the prices recently? Wild stuff. So, you're probably wondering where you are going to come up with this sort of cash. That is the topic of this article.

Basically, there are several ways of funding your college education One is to save up enough money in the first place. This, as we know, isn't very easy. Another way is to get others to give you money for college in the form of scholarships and grants. The final way is to borrow the money, either through government backed loans or from private lenders.

Let's talk about savings. The key with saving for college is to make sure that you're keeping as much money as possible. For this, you'll want a tax free college account. These are usually known as "529" plans, and offer a tax sheltered method of saving for college. This is the way to go if you can.

The best way to get money for college is through scholarships and grants since these will give you free money. The biggest key to getting this is to apply! So many people do not apply for scholarships, and thus leave a lot of money on the table. Don't let this be you.

If you can't come up with the money by any other means, you'll need to check into getting student loans. Student loans are typically low interest loans that you will have to repay over a long period of time after you graduate. These come in two flavors, government backed and private. Let's talk about both.

A government backed loan is typically a Stafford loan. These loans are given out to most students, with increasing amounts available each year. These are the best loans to have, as they give you the most flexibility and the lowest rates. A private loan, on the other hand, is just a regular loan from a bank that will come with its own interest rates and terms. These loans are typically not as flexible as the government options, and should be considered as a last resort.

Paying for college isn't easy, but I hope this has given you a good idea of what kind of options are out there. Best of luck!

How Can Art Be Defined?

By The Art Fanatic

Art allows a culture to communicate its ideas and values to future generations. Tiling, weaving, border decoration, and other such systems allow cultures to survive and propagate themselves. Dictators and autocrats have attempted to control the creation and display of art since the beginning of history. People are easier to control if their artisitic horizons are narrowed to the rulers' preferences. Art allows people to express meaning through craft, and potentially lets them share nontrivial insights about the world around them.

Art is sometimes thought to include only certain groups of people and to exclude others. Art is frequently held to be a plaything of the wealthy because of the time required to pursure artistic endeavors and the cost of obtaining them. But art allows anyone to experience emotions and thoughts, because it now includes not only the artist's ideas but those that the viewer brings to the artistic work. It can be used to educate, propagandize, control, and convert people to new ways of thinking. This is effective because art uses our automatic responses to biological stimulation in novel ways.

Art is part of being human, of living: it's part of everyone's experience, not just the experts'. Art is an expression of one's creative impulse, one's emotions, beliefs, and ideas. Art is a teacher, and at the same time it provides a way for a person to show the world something new and exciting.

The Artist has freedom of expression, as well as the people that interpret the art. Contemporary art sets up communication from viewers and the artist. Nara and Takano use children as the main subject in almost all of the art they do. Nara creates scenes made of anger and rebellion in children. Takano shows the innocence of children with nude girls. Frido Kahlo and Damien Hirst are true artist by Dickies definition. Dickies are theory makes it possible for two works of art to be listed under the same heading of art.

Art is used by some therapist and is known as art therapy. In the end the goal is to heal through creative art.

Art isn't a frivolous diversion, but an absolute human necessity. Art represents how we see our world and how we tell others about the world we see. Art is integral to the experience of being human. These are the reasons I gifted my children with books about great artists like Dali, Pollack and Picasso.

SAP In India - An Overview of Opportunities

By Victor Hayes

Back in the day when computers were infants, an engineer or IT tech (depending on which term more thoroughly describes the daunting challenge) was tasked with the logistics of juggling hundreds, at times thousands of computer systems entirely at once. All of these systems required to be dealt, kept, and looked after. And info coming from two different systems had to be coordinated, researched and utilised to the collective data in a way that made sense. It was a tedious task to say the least, and costly.

While organizations in the early 1970`s gladly opted for this bound mess of computer systems over old-fashioned hand written notes; they no doubt wished for a easier way. In 1972, a saviour was born in the average German town of Walldorf, that would anoint the industry with a result.

SAP or Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing, created a revolutionary system called SAP R/2 in 1979, just 7 yr after the enterprise began performances. This system was the 1st scalable solution to enterprise management that integrated core capabilities into a single system. The launch was a winner and was the impetus for a revision dubbed SAP R/3, just over a decade later, in 1992. It likewise, was a huge success.

Nowadays having been on the market for several 29 years, you would assume that it would have penetrated all of the major markets; and it has, except when you consider that India and China were far from major even only a few years ago. Industrialization has passed the torch of wealth to several seemingly unannounced nations and created new markets along the way.

China`s rise to wealth though, may not be so unexpected; dealing that for the past 30 years, 80% of all consumer goods came from this country. India, on the other hand has been just a blip on the map of worldwide trade; as yet. Walk down any main city, and you will in all likelihood discover a merchandise made in India. The widest steel maker in the world, Arcelor-Mittal, is a native Indian. Don`t forget that most outsourced jobs end up in India, not to mention that numerous of the greatest enterprises in the globe, have satellite offices in here. This large inundation of wealth comes from plain supply and demand; price drives demand and India can produce volume on the cheap.

All this fresh found wealth brings with it the prospect for opportunity. Inside that framework, entrepreneurs will reach to start businesses. And every last one of these businesses will become reliant on the need to manage data effectively. This realization has led the aforementioned firm, SAP, to open it's individual satellite office to supervise the main requirement.
